About the 3D Secure Service

Bank of Ireland 3D Secure is a fraud prevention service designed to protect your Maestro® Debit Card details when purchasing goods and services online from any retailer participating in the service. The service is provided by MasterCard®, owners of the Maestro® brand.

During the purchase of goods/services from participating retailers you will be prompted to register for 3D Secure. You will be asked to input some personal details to confirm your identity. Once this information is verified, you will be asked to create a password, known as your 3D Secure Password. You must keep your personal information safe at all times.

After registering, when you use your card online with participating retailers, you will be asked to enter your 3D Secure Password to confirm your identity.

If you forget your 3D Secure Password you can create a new one by clicking on the ‘Forgot your Password’ link during the shopping process. For security reasons you will be prompted to input some personal details to verify your identity.

If you enter your 3D Secure Password incorrectly three times or if we are otherwise unable to verify your identity, the transaction could be declined.

Once you have registered for 3D Secure, you will not be permitted to cancel that registration.

The service is an extra security feature of your card and is not intended to replace any security obligations in the Terms and Conditions of your Maestro Debit Card.

Should your card be cancelled, you will need to register any future card separately for this service. If your card expires and is renewed, you will not need to register the replacement card for this service.

Please refer to our list of Frequently Asked Questions for further information. Or, alternatively please contact us on 0845 6008 365 and a member of our customer services team will assist you.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is a free fraud prevention service that helps guard against unauthorised use of your Bank of Ireland UK Maestro card on the Internet. It allows you to add a personal security password, known as your 3D Secure Password, to your existing Maestro Debit Card which you then use to validate each online transaction. This helps to protect you from unauthorised use when shopping online as only you know the password you have chosen.

How does 3D Secure work?

3D Secure is a bit like Chip and PIN for the Internet. When you register, you set a 3D Secure Password that you keep secret, just like your PIN. Then, when you buy goods or services at any one of the 300,000+ participating retailers, you’re prompted for your 3D Secure Password to authorise that the card is yours and the purchase can go ahead.

It gives you peace of mind because once you’ve registered, if someone attempts to use your card fraudulently at any of these retailers, they won’t be able to do it without your 3D Secure Password.

How does 3D Secure protect me?

Since your card is protected by your personal 3D Secure Password only you can use your card online at any one of the participating retailers.

I have more than one Bank of Ireland Maestro Debit Card. Can I use the same 3D Secure Password for all my cards?

Yes, if you so wish. When you register your Bank of Ireland Maestro Debit Card with 3D Secure you will set a personal 3D Secure Password .This 3D Secure Password will be valid for the Bank of Ireland Maestro Debit Card that you have just registered; if you have more than one card you will need to register each individually, and you can - if you wish – choose the same 3D Secure Password for each and every card as only you will know what this password is.

What Password should I choose?

You must select a 3D Secure Password between 8-15 characters, which includes at least one number and one letter. You may not use a 3D Secure Password that you have used in the past.
